Types of Credit Card Fraud

Credit card fraud is a generic term for any fraudulent act done using a credit card, including a debit card or credit card. The principal goal can often be to gain products or services in place of money or to repay another person, who is acting as the employer. These acts of credit card fraud are becoming increasingly difficult to detect and to protect against. To do this, many businesses have moved away from relying on receipts, invoices or other forms of tangible evidence of the transaction to prove the credit card was spent. While the traditional method of recording the card transaction may still be used, it is now rarely used in favor of direct deposit or electronic banking, which are both less time consuming and difficult for the would-be victim to track down. Instead, most of today's businesses rely on statements from a point of sales system that are generated using software that automatically processes cardholder data and debits and credits. There are many forms of credit card fraud and some, like identity theft or fraudulent purchases, may go unnoticed by the victim for months or even years. Debit and credit card fraud can also go through the motions quite smoothly. In this type, someone uses the stolen card to make unauthorized transactions, such as purchasing merchandise or food items, or paying rent or mortgage payments. While some merchants do attempt to check cardholder information against their systems to avoid charges for fraudulent transactions, the vast majority of merchants do not do this. Thus, the victim is charged the full amount of a fraudulent purchase, and is usually in a position of helplessness because they cannot dispute the charge.

Another form of credit card fraud is called skimming. Skimming involves taking advantage of a processing system where the issuer verifies the details of the credit cardholder, including address, name, address, and date of birth, and then only allowing the card to be processed with a particular company. The skimming agent can use this information to obtain purchases at retailers around the world. Some states have become particularly stringent about this kind of activity because it enables the thief to avoid detection from the issuer, and often makes the transaction irreversible.

A classic example of credit card fraud in which the thief skips a transaction is called chargeback. When a consumer disputes a transaction that the thief made on an unauthorized account, the bank will request that the signature be verified. If the signature cannot be verified, usually a credit card is then blocked and the offending item will be reported to the police. Even when the signature can be verified later, the bank may choose not to pursue the case if it does not appear that the fraudulent act was intentional. Chargebacks are the most common way that fraudulent activity is carried out and it tends to be the simplest and easiest way to steal money from unsuspecting victims.

An illegal act that also involves stealing money or items with the help of stolen credit cards is known as used fraudulently. Used fraudulently means that a credit card provider has used a card that has been stolen to make purchases for a company. These companies will often sell the stolen cards back to legitimate credit card providers, who then issue new cards to their customers. This kind of selling of stolen cards is common in restaurants. A restaurant owner may want to limit the amount of used credit card fraudulently because if he sells too many cards, he may not be able to get some of his losses back.

ID theft is now another way that people can be victimized by credit cards. It occurs when someone uses your personal information, such as your name or address, to apply for a loan or another form of credit. More commonly, ID theft happens online and it is estimated that over one million Americans have been the victim of identity fraud.

While credit cards tend to be the easiest way to steal from others, there are other less common ways that people can be victims of this type of criminal activity. Check out this article: https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Credit_card_fraud to get more info on the topic.
